Pregnancy Complications
Pregnancy is the phase in a woman’s life where everything changes, and will never be the same again. The prospect of pending motherhood and the idea of nurturing a new life inside your womb for nine months is an exciting but challenging time in your life. However, the excitement is often coupled with anxiety as you realize the harsh reality that complications can set in anytime which could jeopardize your life and the life of your baby.
It is very important therefore to pay attention and not overlook possible complications during pregnancy so that appropriate treatment can be given immediately.
Pregnancy Complications
While some women breeze through pregnancy without any hitches at all, not all women are that fortunate. Some women may face serious health problems and complications during pregnancy that would render them indisposed. Any unusual symptom of pregnancy warrants immediate medical attention so your doctor can conduct a thorough checkup and address the problem earlier. Here are some complications during pregnancy that may possibly arise anytime:
Anemia
When there is insufficient amount of blood cells circulating in your body, anemia occurs. This is one of the most common complications during pregnancy and mild cases should not harm you or your baby so there’s no need to worry. Two types of anemia could strike you anytime during the duration of your pregnancy, and these are dilutional anemia where there is an increase of blood circulating in your body to sustain your developing baby, and the iron deficiency anemia. The latter is when your iron-level is insufficient and red blood cells aren't being made to sustain your body’s needs, especially during pregnancy, the time when you need it most.
Treatment for Anemia
Taking iron supplement can help you address iron deficiency anemia and prevent serious complications during pregnancy. You should also increase your intake of iron-rich foods and these includes baked potatoes, spinach, fish, red meat, kidney beans, chicken and pork,
In cases when your body refuses to absorb iron into your bloodstream, there is still hope for you to regain from your iron deficiency through iron supplements that can be injected into your bloodstream. You also need a huge dosage of Folic acid or vitamin B12 in your body during pregnancy.
High Blood Pressure (Hypertension)
When a woman’s blood pressure is elevated, this is a complication during pregnancy which needs immediate attention. Chronic hypertension is when a woman's blood pressure is elevated before pregnancy. Studies show that about eight percent of pregnancies result in pregnancy-induced hypertension, and this could develop anytime after the first 20 weeks of your baby’s life. Women nearing their delivery date are more prone to attacks with high blood pressure but this will eventually go away after you give birth.
persistent headaches, flashing light, blurred vision, upper abdominal pain and sudden excessive lower leg swelling.
Treatment for Pre-eclampsia
The cause of preeclampsia during pregnancy is yet unknown so treatment for this symptom also remains unproven. If a woman is nearing her due date and is suffering from pre-eclampsia, the doctor might induce her delivery because this is a serious complication.
Eclampsia
Eclampsia, which is characterized by seizures and coma, is rare but it happens. This serious pregnancy complication could have developed because of a pregnant woman having pre-eclampsia. It is important to have this diagnosed early on.
Treatment for Eclampsia
Eclampsia should not be taken for granted. It is considered a medical emergency which needs immediate medical attention. The pregnant woman should be given oxygen and drugs in order to prevent any further seizures from eclampsia from happening again. When this complication arises, there is an urgent need for the delivery of the baby. This is necessary so the mother can be treated immediately.
Other Complications during Pregnancy
If you are free from the aforementioned complications during pregnancy which are anemia, hypertension and preeclampsia, it’s not time for you to sit back and relax because there are more complications arising from pregnancy that could hit you.
Uterine problems such as fibroids can occur without warning. Fibroids are benign growths usually found on the uterus but this is usually common in older women than younger women. During pregnancy, you may also be having problems with bowel problems such as anal fissure, hemorrhoids and others. Other complications are digestive problems, infections, and others.
To sum it up, whatever complications develop during pregnancy should be immediately reported to your doctor. Do not take anything for granted because it may be too late if you procrastinate to ask for solutions to difficulties and complications that could have been addressed immediately.
